Even thought it is commonly believed that women are more prone to fall prey to depression, men too are equally liable to suffer from it. Although the causes of depression and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.depressionsymptomstreatments.com"><strong>signs of depression</strong></a> among men may be different from that of women, men are more unlikely to admit or express their anxieties, which may lead to severe depression among men. It has been found that in the United States alone, about seven percent of men suffer annually fall prey to depression.</p>
<p>In men, the major cause of depression arises out of work related issues and next to that the major cause can be relationship issues. Work related stress leading to depression has induced a high suicide rate among men, the world over.</p>
<p>The chief reasons for harboring stress at work places are- having issues with career related plans, uncertain future at work, doubting the views and expectations of your boss or colleagues, working in an organization which does not have a well defined growth plan, not having permanent jobs etc. work related issues can be treated by opening a proper channel of communication among bosses and colleagues, not having high expectations and pushing yourself too much, not being overtly competitive and worry too much about the future and not treating every project too seriously and loosing unnecessary sleep over it.</p>

Also men may not be able to deal very successfully with rising age and think that their looks as well as their performance levels have dropped considerably.</p>
<p>All these causes may induce men to feel bored, worthless, making them question where their lives are heading, both professionally and personally.</p>
<p>It is necessary to take the challenge of work place and age related issues head on. Friends and family need to be sensitive to the desolation and depression of such men and handle them gently and with loving care. <p>But suddenly&#8230;she was alone. Alone in every aspect of decision making. Alone in paying the bills, looking after the well-being of her children, while trying to earn a living as a customer service representative in a well-known retail store. She goes home so tired, she is mentally and physically drained from taking calls and assisting angry customers.  Upon reaching her home, she is still expected to do the cooking and satisfy her kids&#8217; demands for attention. </p>
<p>One day, she just sat in front of the t.v set&#8230;staring at the screen without really watching the show. She felt very sad at how her life turned out.  Instead of seeking help and companionship, she avoided her own family and whoever was left of her few friends. After the break up of her marriage, she everything as black and bleak.  A dark cloud hung over her.  She slowly lost interest in going to work.  Soon, she found herself locked up at home. She was in the pit of despair. </p>
<p>She was scared of being a single parent.  Judy found herself in the middle of depression. It is condition that afflicts millions of people around the world.</p>

When you are engrossed in a really good movie or a compelling book, you completely forget that you are lonely. But if you stick your head up and notice you are all alone, or if you notice a happy couple and it is the opposite of your own situation, then your loneliness quickly returns and you feel depressed. The word &#8216;depressed&#8217; is a very common, everyday word. Almost all of us feel depressed. The ups and downs of life are common and normal and most people can recover quite quickly in dealing with depression&#8230;but some are not as fortunate.</p>
<p>Research shows that, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 20.9 million American adults, suffer from depression. Even Winston Churchill was not an exemption. Depression is a serious medical illness that involves the brain. It&#8217;s more than just a feeling of being &#8220;blue&#8221; or &#8220;empty&#8221; for a few days. They persist and interfere with everyday life. </p>
<p>Depressive illnesses often interfere with normal functioning and cause pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the ill person. But much of this suffering is unnecessary.</p>

<p>Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment, although the great majority even those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped. Thanks to years of fruitful research, there are now antidepressant medications and psychosocial therapies such as cognitive or behavioral, &#8220;talk&#8221;, or counseling that ease the pain of depression.</p>
<p>Depression can sometimes be caused by a chemical imbalance and medications are often used to correct this imbalance. A physician can prescribe the appropriate medications or refer a depressed person to another doctor who is more knowledgeable. There are several antidepressants available and sometimes more than one medication may be suggested. The physician may prescribe which medications to use based on several factors such as how has depression affected the activity, eating, sleep and interests patterns of a person.</p>
<p>Other components, such as anxiety, will also help determine which, if any, medication to use. Sometimes a trial and error method may be used to find the most effective medication for the depressed person which can often result in greater emotional distress.</p>
