Living and aging with happiness certainly sounds like the right way to approach life, but naturally, life can include difficulties that create sadness or even depression. While it is normal to experience episodes of negative emotions, it is important to recognize when ordinary sadness becomes a more significant state of depression that needs professional attention.

Seniors have an increased chance for risk of developing some level of depression. Changes as the result of aging, medical illnesses, and genetics put the older adult at a greater risk for developing depression. According to the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation, depression affects approximately 15 out of every 100 adults over age 65 in the United States. The disorder affects 25–30 percent of people in hospitals and nursing homes.

Social Wellness Helps to Curb Depression
One important sign of depression is when people withdraw from the social activities in which they would normally participate. Signs of withdrawal include neglecting personal appearance or cooking and eating less, and expressions such as, “It’s too much trouble,” “I don’t feel well enough,” or “I don’t have the energy.” Isolation for seniors is a real concern and ultimately contributes to feelings of sadness, which could lead to depression.

According to the Ohio Department of Aging, “Social wellness involves the ability of people to successfully engage, interact, and maintain healthy, meaningful relationships. It means feeling connected to, participating in, and contributing to the welfare of the community.”

Social well-being is a crucial piece of a person’s health, especially a senior’s health. Studies show that isolated people:

Are more susceptible to illness
Have a death rate of two to three times higher than those who are not socially isolated
Have decreased ability to deal with stress
Are more vulnerable to safety risks such as elder abuse and substance misuse

Therefore, a person with a healthy social network has a better opportunity for optimal emotional and social well-being, decreased chance for depression, isolation, loneliness, poor heath, and decreased life expectancy.

To expand a senior’s social network, the senior can volunteer their time or their skills to a good cause, such as to a library, with the arts, or they could offer to be a companion. “Researchers have found that volunteering is associated with a decrease in frailty. Volunteering connects seniors to like-minded people who are working toward the same goals, while enabling a person to give back to his or her community,” states Barbara Riley, Director of the Ohio Department of Aging.

How Technology is Improving Social Wellness
A study called “Internet Use and Depression Among the Elderly” done by The Phoenix Center for Advanced Legal and Economic Public Policy Studies found that Internet use led to about a 20 percent reduction in depression by contributing positively to mental well-being and facilitating interpersonal communication, thereby reducing loneliness. The Center’s findings support policy change to help seniors gain access to the Internet by making it more accessible, whether by developing broadband infrastructure to remote locations and/or through the placement of computers in senior living environments.

Intel-GE has concentrated efforts on developing Internet usage opportunities for seniors. Their subsidiary, Care Innovations Connect, looks to tackle social isolation and wellness through telehealth. While much of the telehealth industry is focused on devices for better home health, Intel has a history of researching social need of seniors and creating technology to enhance social well-being. GE’s Medtronic Inc.’s CEO explains, “We recognize that the conditions faced by home health patients are not necessarily clinical. It is part of our core mission to address social and support needs.” The fact that major corporations, such as these, are devoting resources to this issue is promising for seniors.

Seniors Can, and Do, Age with Happiness
After countless experiments of studying “What makes people happy?” scientists and statisticians have determined that four main factors which influence a person’s happiness: gender, personality, external circumstances, and age.

Women tend to be happier than men are. If you have a personality that is more neurotic, you are more prone to guilt, anger, and anxiety. Therefore, happiness will be harder to achieve than for those whose personality is more extroverted and who like to engage with other people. As to be expected, external circumstances, such as relationships, education, income, and health, shape the way people feel.

When it comes to age, Andrew Oswald, a professor at the Warwick Business School, and some of his colleagues noticed a trend appearing in the data in the 1990s. This trend showed that people across the globe are generally at their least happy while in their late 40s early 50s, but get happier as they get older. The theory behind this finding suggests the people begin to accept their position in life and are more comfortable with who they have become.

How to Make Seniors Happy
If you have a senior loved one or neighbor who could use some “happy” in his or her life, meaningfully engaging with that senior could make a world of difference for his or her state of mind and overall health. Simple gestures are a great start. Here are some suggestions:

Smile at them often
Help them carry something
Call just to see how they are doing
Cook them a nice meal, sit and enjoy it with them
Do errands and chores for them
Teach them how to use a computer
Help them connect to the Internet so they can communicate with friends and family
Listen to their stories – you’d be amazed at what interesting lives seniors have had!

Whether at a mild or serious level, depression creates concern for family members and can cause serious health concerns for the individual. While not everyone who experiences sadness can be labeled as depressed, the warning signs are worth noting, and the senior’s physician should become involved if the symptoms continue. Seniors may be reluctant to tell someone if they are feeling sad for many reasons, so it is up to the family members or caregivers to recognize when a senior’s behavior has changed and may be of serious concern.

Untreated depression can aggravate symptoms of other illnesses, lead to disability or even premature death, or result in suicide. When it is properly diagnosed and treated, more than 80 percent of those suffering from depression recover and return to their normal lives (Geriatric Mental Health Foundation).

Depression may be hard to diagnose because it can closely resemble dementia in older adults. A professional can perform neuropsychological testing to determine a conclusive diagnosis.

This chart shows the similarities and differences between depression and dementia. Differences are highlighted with bold and italic font.

Types of Depression You Should Know About
(Source: WebMD.com)

The two most common types of depression are (1) clinical depression, also called major and (2) chronic depression, also called Dysthymia. Each type has clear symptoms that define them.

Clinical or major depression. The National Institute of Mental Health explains that the symptoms of this type of depression interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy activities he or she once enjoyed. The symptoms present themselves daily or for most of the day for a period of at least two weeks. Depressed mood or loss of interest accompanies the other symptoms. The symptoms cannot be the result of substance abuse, a medical condition, or within two months of the loss of a loved one.

Chronic depression or Dysthymia. This type of depression is less severe than clinical depression. It is characterized by a depressed mood that lasts for at least two years, but does not disable the person from functioning in normal life. Symptoms for seniors who have Dysthymia include difficulty caring for themselves, isolation, mental decline, and medical issues. A person with this condition experiences feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem, low energy, decreased ability to concentrate, has poor appetite or may over-eat, and may get too little or too much sleep. Overall, a person will take on a discouraging view of their lives, and problems seem more difficult to solve.

Depression is Treatable
It is important to realize that depression is not a normal part of aging. Most depressed people can improve dramatically from treatment. In fact, there are highly effective treatments for depression in late life. Common treatments prescribed by physicians include psychotherapy and antidepressant medication. Altering lifestyle by increasing exercise, changing diet, and increasing social interactions can also help to improve a person’s feelings of sadness and help fight off depression.

While depression is not a normal part of the aging process, seniors are susceptible to depression. The sooner that signs of sadness and loneliness are addressed by a caregiver, a family member or a physician, the less chance that the senior’s emotional and physical health will be negatively affected. Making the effort to get and keep a senior on the right path toward living a fulfilling and happy life are crucial if he or she is to age with happiness and avoid depression.

Believe it or not, at some point in our lives, everyone will wind up suffering from various types of depression. Some of these are milder while some can be a lot more serious. Even though it is incredibly probable that depression help will be needed by everyone at some point, recent medical and sociological studies have shown that some age groups and sociological groups are more likely than others to suffer from depression. It is actually a very known fact that not all of the people affected by depression are aware that they need depression therapy, so most of them find themselves in the position of not knowing they need to make all the efforts necessary to cure depression. Let us see who exactly those persons are and also what is left for them to do.

Teenagers are unfortunately the number one consumers of depression help medicines and therapies. This is because when individuals are in their teen years, the chances of not being content with themselves on account of normal bodily changes or hormonal and chemical unbalances in the brain and the rest of the body, which can be reasons to be bullied at school, are very high. Few people know this, but depression is also hereditary, it can be transmitted from parents to children, which makes even small children predisposed to needing depression therapy. The good news is that the whole world has taken a stand against the alarming numbers of teen suicide cases due to depression, because most of the times, the teenagers who commit suicide on account of depression symptoms do not benefit from depression therapy.

Many of the behavioral patterns that we observe in teenagers are actually related to depression. For instance, most teens are known to be unruly, out of control and difficult, but these symptoms appear not just due to natural hormonal changes, but also to teenage depression. Some teens might manifest the same symptoms as regular depression, but more often than not, teenage depression has its own symptoms, for instance violence, crying or irritability, anger, hostility, overreacting, body image issues in girls or lack of preoccupation regarding hygiene and appearance in boys, ADHD, tardiness, problems with keeping their grades up, alcohol and/or drug use, suicidal thoughts, self-injury also called self-mutilation, internet addiction, and many others.

Just remember that even though teenage depression is the most common type of depression documented, all people, regardless of their age can use depression help to change their lives for the better. It is incredibly important for all of us to make all the efforts necessary so as to limit the numbers of persons that suffer from depression by improving the accessibility of the numerous modern depression therapy techniques. Additionally, it would be ideal for us all to try our best to make out of depression only a temporary disorder, instead of letting it affect us for the rest of our lives. A loving, safe home environment, together with a healthy self-image can dramatically reduce the chances of being affected by depression, not only in your teen years, but also for the rest of your life. There are ways to cure depression, so if you realize that you or one of your friends suffer from it, you can ask for specialized help without fears!

Are you a sufferer of chronic depression? Are you being treated with anti depressant medication and talk therapy? Are these treatments working for you? A lot of people tend to find positives in the treatments. For two years I’ve been taking Zoloft and it has helped me feel better than ever. Medication has definitely, come a long way.

Unfortunately there are others who cannot seem to get the same effects. Is this you? No matter which medications they try and regardless of who they talk to they can’t seem to find relief. What’s so disturbing is that this is not uncommon. Depression is a complex disease that affects as many as 20 million different people.

It’s not easy for a therapist or doctor when it comes to figuring out just the right combination of medication and talk therapy considering just how different we all are and how differently we respond to treatment. Wouldn’t it be helpful if we could put ourselves in a position where we had a much better chance of getting these treatments to work?

Studies have concluded that a person’s diet can have a significant effect on depression and its symptoms.

The Diet to Prevent Depression:

There is scientific evidence that proves that certain foods can help to eliminate the symptoms associated with depression. In addition, there is conclusive evidence that eating foods that contain particular ingredients can prevent depression. Here is a look at some of the essential foods and ingredients that can prove to be absolutely vital to your mental health.

          ]]>

1. To relieve or prevent depression one should consider using Omega 3 fatty acids available in fish oils. Research with the most recent study conducted by Ohio State University has shown that depressed people often lack the correct balance of fatty acids. Current recommendations allow up to two servings each week of cold-water fish and the best source of Omega 3 comes from salmon and trout.

2. Treating depression and mood elevation has been very successfully achieved when vitamins such as Vitamin B12 were used to treat the conditions. A lack of B vitamins is a cause of depression although researchers are not sure why. Things like spinach, salads, and avocados contain these vitamins.

3. Many minerals are essential with regard to alleviating depression. It has been shown that some people may have a deficiency in minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and potassium, when suffering. One example would be iron deficiency, also known as Anemia which has been found to be a major cause. The minerals you need to fight depression can be found usually in meats and vegetables.

Foods to Avoid:

Just as there are certain foods that actually work to reduce the possibility of developing and enduring symptoms that are associated with the “blues”, there are certain foods, beverages, and ingredients that should be avoided or if you are experiencing depression or even if you are prone to depression.

1. Carbohydrates – Decreasing carbohydrates has been found to be extremely beneficial when it comes to combating depression. The intake of carbs, which raises serotonin levels, will alleviate depression. The problem is that after the high is over the depression will return, often worse than before.

2. Caffeine – When depressed, caffeine can make the situation worse. Caffeine is a stimulant that can get you feeling “up”. However, it can bring you “down” really fast.

3. Alcohol should be avoided as it is a natural depressant.

3. Sugar – Metabolism in a person’s body can be swayed by large amounts of sugar entering it and should be avoided if possible.

4. Salt – If you are someone who has difficulties struggling with depression, it is best to minimize your salt intake.

Conclusion:

Everyone knows the saying “you are what you eat”. This is especially true if you suffer from depression and the symptoms of depression are not easy to treat being different people respond differently to different treatment options.

One thing that is certain is that by maintaining a healthy diet you can relieve or even prevent depression altogether.
Scott Becker is an expert author who usually writes on depression and anxiety.

Depression is a serious mental state, which can lead to extremely violent behavior, sabotaged family relationships, and professional career in doldrums. During serious stage of depression, people even develop suicidal tendencies. Depression is characterized by fluctuations in mood and total mental instability. Under certain conditions, a person can also exhibit signs of depression such as increasingly restless behavior, energetic, talkative and powerful destructive thinking. Even high-flying mood swings can spiral down to negative feelings such as easy-irritation, ever-confusion, violent anger, sudden feeling of choke, etc.

People often show different signs of depression under different circumstances and living regions. They show slightly abnormal behavior when focus on their diurnal activities such as talking, sleeping, eating etc. They show sudden change in mood and sporadic colors of sadness, sense of worthlessness, loss of concentration, loss of pleasure, sleep problems, etc. However, such patterns of highs and lows vary for each person depending upon the severity and length of depression. For some people, depression can last for weeks or months, even for years, but for others it can be a matter of few days or weeks.

          ]]>

Clinical psychiatrist and consultants can recognize the stages of depression and its symptoms in men and women. They can also predict the worst possible dangers of the depressive disorders. The different depressed phases can be highly-dangerous. They can even separate depression from other physical or psychological disorders, assisting them in treating depression in a focused manner.

Possible Depression Symptoms

The dramatic mood swings is a first known pattern of depression. Depression strikes any time but leaves its lasting impression on the minds, which sometimes cannot be recovered easily. A person may experience the sudden mood change for weeks and months. He may also feel change in food habits and social behavior. These are the symptoms that can be easily observed in people having depression. The severity of mood swings can differ from person to person depending upon the living conditions, geographical area, working conditions and age factor.

The stages of depression can be equally intense at times when not treated seriously. Sadness, worthlessness, and anxiety affect every facet of life such as feelings, sleeping, thought process, long-term relationships, and ability to work at length. If depression is not treated in early stages, it grows worse altogether affecting the normal running of lives. Therefore, one must rush to the medical help after observing such symptoms of depression.

Diagnosis

Early diagnosis can easily solve the problem of depression and can bring a person back to its original state. Psychologist and consultants can read the symptoms of depression and make an accurate diagnosis for further treatment. A depression diagnosis is made by taking close note of symptoms, including their severity and length.

Treatment

The best treatment for depression is a perfect combination of medication and counseling sessions. Clinical psychiatrist and consultants often treat the depressive symptoms with effective drugs along with regular counseling. Sometime doctors recommend regular exercise and social involvement as per the severity of the depression.

Therefore, depression should not be treated as a deadly disease and simple treatments along with medical care can alone make the difference.

In search for a more natural approach in the objective of treating depression, many people consider the effectiveness of herbal remedies for depression. One good thing why many turn to herbal remedies is the truth that they are less expensive. This is a wise option – why turn to costly antidepressant drugs when there is available solution that won’t hurt your pocket at all?

Next rationale is because herbal remedies have reduced incidence of negative side effects; however, not because they are natural doesn’t mean that there is absolutely zero chance for unfavorable side effects. Of course, there is always possibility that adverse reactions may come about – only they are far less incidents and less severe than those of commercially prepared solutions.

Common Herbal Remedies for Depression

• St John’s Wort

There are many researches showing evidences that St. John’s Wort is considered as the wonder drug for depression. While others attest to the fact that it is not to be considered as a wonder or a surefire drug that can treat depression. Those who are contesting that it be considered as a wonder drug; however cannot deny the reality that St. John’s Wort can really help in many ways in the treatment of depression. Whether be it a wonder drug or not, the good thing lies in the fact that it can really aid in the treatment of depressive patients.

On the other hand, there are studies that claim that St. John’s Wort should not be used in combination with other chemically prepared conventional anti-depressant medicines. This is because there is a great possibility that both may interact and may result in unpleasant effects. For this reason, it is highly recommended to consult with a doctor in case you want to take St. John’s Wort with other types of drugs.

          ]]>

• Ginkgo Biloba

Researches prove that ginkgo biloba stimulate blood flow to the brain, which is essential in uplifting the mood of a depressed individual. For this matter, ginkgo has been considered as one of the most effective herbal remedies for depression.

• Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng is believed to be having capacity to improve the stability of certain neurotransmitters present in the brain. Stability results to effective functioning in terms of adjusting to certain physical stresses within the external environment. It has been confirmed that Siberian ginseng help improve abstract thinking as well as stimulating the immune system of the body.

Other herbal remedies you can use:

• Treat Depression with St. John’s Wort: St. John’s Wort is a known antidepressant herb that has strong evidence in relieving anxiety due to depression. A daily dose of 900 milligram of St. John’s Wort should be given to patients with mild to moderate depression for immediate relief.

• Depression and Oat Straw: Oat Straw is a known herb that is high in silica, a substance that can sustain and strengthen the central nervous system. This herb has been long used to treat depression. Just consume 500 milligrams of oat straw twice a day and you should be all set.

• Basil Treatment: Basil is a known natural herb tonic. It helps uplift fatigue and pressure, the usual root causes of anxiety and depressions. Basil oil can be used as inhalant. It can also be mixed in baths or used as a massage therapy.

• Clove Natural Treatment: Clove is a popular herb used by those who suffer from sleep disorders due to depression.

Bring into boil a quarter of an ounce of crushed clove with 2 ounces of rose petal and an ounce of mint. Inhale the steam. It will help you rest and feel at ease.

• Ginger for Depression: Aside from its uplifting flavor, ginger also has high quality anti-depressant properties. It has been long used for treating anxiety and depression.

It should be taken or consumed accordingly, as it may cause mild heartburns when taken in excessive doses.

Even if research and studies prove that herbal remedies for depression can be effective enough in the treatment of depression, moderate and severe clinical depression should always be consulted first with a qualified medical doctor. In the same way that any actions and decisions regarding the use of herbal remedies for depression require your doctor’s consent because of possible interaction with medicines being taken.

A major depressive episode can be devastating to every person and family that it touches. In addition to emotional suffering, there are measurable consequences to society. To fully understand the magnitude of the problem of depression, let’s take a look at some of the relevant depression statistics.

About 19 million American adults are afflicted by depressive disorders in any given year. This includes major depression, dsythymia and bipolar disorder. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of the adult population suffers from depression in most industrialized societies. It is the leading cause of disability among those aged 15 to 44 in the United States, and the leading cause of disability for those over age 5 worldwide.

Major depressive disorder can occur at any age, but the median age of onset is 32. New reports indicate that four percent of preschoolers have been diagnosed with clinical depression, and the number of children with depression is growing at an alarming 23 percent every year. One area of concern: current antidepressants have shown little effectiveness in patients under age 18.

          ]]>

Women are diagnosed with depression at about twice the rate as men. However, this may be due to the fact that men are less likely to seek treatment for depressive disorders. Only eight percent of depressed African-American males seek treatment. Overall, it is believed that about 80 percent of depression cases go undiagnosed and untreated. Depression is a recurring illness: after each depressive episode, your risk of future episode increases.

Depression accounts for a huge cost to the economy as well. It is responsible for a major portion of absenteeism from work. Costs to employers in absenteeism and lost productivity due to depressive disorders is estimated to be more than $51 billion per year. This figure does not include costs for treatment and prescription medications.

The effects of depression can spread through families and across generations. Research has indicated that children of depressed mothers score lower on mathematical achievement tests. Developmental delays in children aged two to four years old have also been linked to depressed mothers.

Unfortunately, society continues to attach a stigma to depression. Surveys show that 54 percent of people consider depression to be a personal weakness. In one study, 41 percent of women stated they were too embarrassed to seek help for their depression.

There is a natural reluctance to interfere in the private emotions of others. But to reach those who are suffering from depressive disorders, it may be necessary to step beyond our comfort zone and encourage those we know and love to seek treatment. Regardless of whether depression is affecting us personally, it is certainly causing pain in our community.

Women Are At Greater Risk For Depression Than Men

Major and chronic depression affect twice as many women as men, so the statistics say. They do not mention that women go for treatment with less of a feeling of stigma than men. Men think they are weak when they admit depression. Women accept it as a consequence of things gone wrong in their lives. There is no doubt that hormonal changes a woman experiences can be a reason why she might be more prone to depression. Hormones do have a role to play in the messages sent to the brain. Here’s an interesting piece of information. Family doctors are more than twice as likely to suggest that a woman is depressed than a man with the same symptoms.

Being a Victim and Being Depressed:

Children who are molested are more likely to become depressed. There is a much higher incidence of depression among individuals who have been raped, assaulted, and stalked. People who are harassed or abused on the job have higher rates of depression. Any kind of abuse can cause low self esteem, a feeling of having no control of your life, blaming yourself, and feeling alone and unable to tell anyone. If you grow up in a dysfunctional family which does not support and love you for just being you, you are much more likely to get depressed.

          ]]>

Poverty Breeds Depression

Especially now in our time of media telling us all what we should have, poor people tend to feel more depressed. Women and children make up 75% of the people who are poor. Poor people have less access to resources to get the help they need. Low incomes tend to go along with sadness and low morale. These are things in your environment many times you cannot control. Combine this with coming from a dysfunctional family and you have a recipe for disaster, creating anti social people who have a grudge and need to make their anger known. This can cause terrible consequences for all of us.

Old Age Can Bring Depression:

Anyone who tells you the golden years are the best could get a good argument from a lot of people over 50 I know. So many things are happening at this age. Parents are dying, children are leaving home (hopefully), illnesses are starting, and as you retire, things are changing. The death of a life partner can be a terrible end to a relationship which has lasted for years. Our society places so much value on youth that we send the message that if you are old, you aren’t much. Many times older people will congregate with each other so they feel comfortable. They limit contact with younger people and many times that it not good.

So there are many factors and life situations that seem to enter in along with your depression. I pers onally believe that the most important thing to do is to get treatment going and then try to solve the problem which triggered the depression. If you are so depressed you cannot think or solve any problems, you can’t be expected to make it out of the pit.

Interpersonal Therapy:

This therapy deals with how you relate to other people in your life. It focuses on how you communicate and express you feelings. Your social skills are seen at the key to understanding why you are having trouble in your life. You need to learn how to become more self assertive and positive, making eye contact, and rehearsing what you will say or do in a situation. This can be very practical for you to learn better communication skills. But for many people this is not enough. I saw so many couples who were never going to be able to have good relationships. They were different to the core and neither of them could really change. I was never one to prescribe divorce but when I would sit week after week with two people who obviously were destroying each other, I knew they were destined to fail in the relationship.

Anti Depressant Therapy:

There is never anything to be ashamed of in taking anti depressant medication. Anyone you know may be taking it someday, including you. We are so lucky that there are now anti depressants with fewer side effects. We can take them and get fast treatment for depression. Taking the right anti depressant can change your life, and change it for the better. I have talked to so many people who have told me that they had no idea how bad off they were until they started taking anti depressants. If you combine anti depressants with talk therapy, you may get the most benefit of all.

          ]]>

We have learned that depression is triggered by a chemical imbalance in your brain. Just like an antihistamine can stop your sneezing, anti depressants can stop your depression. They can help you to function and get your life moving again. They can lift those heavy clouds off your shoulders and let you see the light.

How long you take the medication is up to you. The biggest challenge is to find out what dose works for you. Too many people give up after the first few weeks saying that the side effects were awful and they never go back to the doctor

It is very important when an anti depressant is prescribed for you or you order it over the internet that you know plenty about this medication. You need to know what its side effects can be.

I encourage people do their own research regarding any medication they use.

Find out:

-What is it supposed to do?

-When and how do I take it?

-What other medicines should I avoid while taking this?

-What food or drinks should I avoid?

-Can I use alcohol with this?

-What are the side effects?

-When will it start to work?

-How long will I be on it?

Take it on yourself to:

-Ask any question you feel is important.

-Tell your doctor about your fears of taking the medicine.

-Let your doctor know if you stop taking your medicine.

-Let your doctor know about any bad side effects.

-Demand a different anti depressant if yours is not helping.

-Ask yourself how you can deal with your problems.

Think about how you can find new ways of handling the problems you have. The medicine gives you more ability to think clearly.

One of the most important things you need to know is that it is quite possible that the first one or two anti depressants you try will not suit you. Every person’s system is different and there is no magic one to fit all. Don’t let yourself get discouraged and just stop taking your pills without trying others. So many people do exactly that and don’t you be one of those people. Push on and get what you need. You are important. You are suffering. You deserve help and deserve to get better. Take the time to find the right anti depressant for you, then stay on it for as long as you need it.
